P Platers in Turbo Cars - WTF?

Postby benking on July 29th, 2010, 8:07 am

I do quite a lot of driving to and from work every day, and lately I've been noticing a lot of green P Platers driving turbo charged cars. Yesterday I saw a guy driving a grey R32 GTS-T which was definitely turbo charged. This morning on my way into work some guy with a black R33 GTS-T, a shit hot sounding screamer pipe and some seriously stretched rubber gave it a boot next to me ... next thing I see a green P plate slapped on the back.

The guy with the R33 had a club high rollers sticker on... anyone know how these people are getting around legislation or are they just breaking the law plain and simple?

Would love to know.

There was a report on one of the current affairs shows a few weeks ago that talked about this. You can apply for a permit to drive these cars and apparently the rejection rate is really low. Not sure if it was QLD or another state.
There's no replacement for displacement.

Lower powered turbo cars such as Smart FourTwo's are ok for P Platers to drive... there is a list on the qld transport website but I just don't get why there are P Platers driving cars that are seriously powerful.

If they're breaking the law then they're stupid. It isn't the fines or demerit points that they need to worry about, it's the possibility of hitting an expensive car and writing it off... Driving a vehicle illegally means that your insurance is instantly void.

It's not worth it. Unless you buy a Turbo Diesel - they go hard as hell if you do some work and you wouldn't get hassled by anyone.

ummmmm the only exceptions i believe are if it is a company car and your driving it between work hours or if it is a family car and the only car that you have access too you can get permission to drive it.

I think they are just being cool kids and breaking the rules. There is a green p plater around woodridge that I see weekly driving a RX8 and P platers arnt aloud rotarys either...

Only rotaries they are allowed are the 12a. Anything bigger than 1200cc is no go. There are exemptions, but majority are work related. If there werent exemptions, there would be several jobs that would be off limits to P platers, which isnt really fair.
Some of the turbo diesels are shit hot. Id never driven one until mum got her car, and all i have to say is wow. It is ridiculously quick.
Other exemptions are if you had the car before the laws came in, or there isnt another car you can drive etc, but you still have to apply.

Any truth to the rumor that QLD has a power to weight system now because of the number of new cars coming out with small motors and turbos?

The Volkswagen Golf for example.. 1.4 Turbo and supercharged that performs like a NA 2.0

This trend is fast becoming the norm as manufacturers chase low emissions without hurting sales...

Roadsmart has all the exemption rules you need to adhere to, in order to be eligble to get an exemption. They are VERY hard to get, and I think thy turn down about 90% of applicants.
Ben I think the bloke who owns the 33 is a carsales man. I'm sure he has posted on boost boasting that he drives a turbo on his p's cause he has an exemption.

True - I thought that it only made them exempt while they were at work though?

Never the less, at Harry's last night there were so many people with P plates and turbo cars...

Can't they wait?

LOL just read this on performance forums:

Devo wrote:if you're that desperate could you buy a turbo car and simply remove the turbo then add a joiner pipe between the exhaust mainifold and dump pipe ? when it's legal simply put the turbo back on.

Hahah yeh they are all over boost lol. Everyone asking if they buy a turboed sil, then ditch the turbo for a while if its legal. haha
And yeh it depends on his situation, his exemption may state that he also needs to drive it to and from work aswell.
If they spent their money building a hardcore N/A and stripped it, it would go just as quick.
